After spending over five years as a safety officer on construction sites, I gained invaluable hands-on experience. I implemented safety policies, conducted risk assessments, facilitated toolbox talks, and ensured compliance with regulations. This intensive experience taught me how to maintain a safe working environment and provided practical solutions for common safety issues.
With this background, I decided to start my own health and safety consulting company, Mzamose Consulting. Although I had limited capital, I used my savings to cover the initial costs of registration and obtaining the necessary documents for running the business. I also rented office space and invested in furniture, supplies, and stationery to create a welcoming environment for my clients.
I secured my first client in 2018, where I helped prepare and compile a safety file, tailored to their specific requirements. As I took on more clients, I built a reputation for trustworthiness and professionalism. Running my own business hasn’t been easy—balancing various values and expectations from clients, managing finances, and maintaining a professional environment has been challenging. However, setting clear policies and goals has helped ensure that everyone is treated professionally.
Starting out, I relied on client payments to cover rent and monthly expenses, which added to the pressure. Despite these challenges, my passion for health and safety and commitment to my consulting business continue to drive me forward.
